Quilt Making
It's Quilt Making Time! The Joy Women are making quilts in January and February, helping Lutheran World Relief with its 2013 Quilt Challenge to have 500,000 quilts donated to them for distribution around the world to people in need. Please join us on each Wednesday in January and February, beginning at 9:00 A.M., in the Sunday School Room closest to the Joy Office and help us make quilts! No experience needed! If you can't help us make the quilts, consider making a monetary donation to help defray the cost of purchasing supplies OR provide cotton fabric - a minimum of one yard pieces. If you can't work on Wednesdays with us, consider making a quilt(s) on your own time and donate them to our effort. If you have questions, contact Joan Schaack or Karen Lundgaard, co-chairs of our Quilting Project. Please see the January Newsletter for more information.
Ongoing JW/ELCA Project

Thanks for your help.
All Women are Invited to the April Bible Study
In April we will revisit the book of Acts, where Pa ul and Barnabas have returned to Antioch after trav eling many miles to share the good news of Jesus Christ. There, in the city where they began their ministry together, they gather the church in order to tell the story o f all that God has done. As we gather to learn fro m them, what stories of faith will we tell? The text for this m onth’s study is Acts 14:21-28 and our study is enti tled “Storytelling.” All women are welcome to gather together at either of our Bible Studies on Tuesday, April 9. A new Bible study, “Gathered by God,” began in September and will last through May 2013. This is the Bible study that
is printed in the Women of the ELCA’s magazine called “Gather.” At our church we have two opportunities to join
together for Bible study. This year both of those will take place on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, September through
May. One is held at 1:30 P.M. at the Manor Apartments and the other will be held at 7:00 P.M. in the Fireside Room at the
church. Wilma Timm leads the afternoon study and Emilie Horken and Marcia Lindseth lead the evening Bible study.
Please attend whichever study fits your schedule best but do plan to join us for this exciting study.
The theme verse for this year’s Bible study is “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among
them.” (Matthew 18:20). In the beginning, God gathers the waters at creation, making order out of chaos and forming the
lands. The Israelites gather manna in the wilderness, shepherds gather their sheep, and kings gather their people. The
assembly gathers for worship; pilgrims gather for festivals; crowds gather around jesus. Disciples gather for prayer and
whole cities gather to hear prophets. We, too, gather in our everyday lives. Friends and family gather to share a meal,
witness a wedding, grieve a loss, celebrate a life. People gather to work for justice, campaign against hunger, and offer
service. We gather to support one another and we gather to learn. We gather our voices in song and prayer. As
communities of faith we gather for renewal, for inspiration, and to share stories that remind us who we are. We are
gathered to be empowered and to be sent as God’s witnesses. Join us as we gather to explore some of these many ways that
we are “Gathered by God!”
The author of this year’s Bible study is Audrey West. She holds a PhD in New Testament as well as additional degrees
from Yale Divinity School. She has served on the tenured faculty of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and
more recently, as a visiting professor at Yale Divinity School and in the Luther Seminary Doctor of Ministry program.
She was the author of the 2004-05 award-winning Bible study, Everyday Surprises: The Parables of Jesus, which was
published in the Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather).
If you’d like your own copy of the Bible study, please subscribe to the monthly Gather Magazine by calling 800-329-4648
or order online at www.augsburgfortress.org (go to Periodicals and Devotionals/ELCA magazines). A one year
subscription/10 issues is only $15.00. JW/ELCA also orders the Gather magazine so it can be shared with those who do
not have their own copies of the study. Each issue of Gather brings you thoughtful articles and engaging, award-winning
Bible studies along with faith-in-daily-life stories, regular columns on prayer and family which encourage, comfort,
challenge and inspire us as women. It’s worth checking out!
If you have any questions about the upcoming Bible studies, contact any of the leaders – Wilma Timm, Marcia Lindseth, or
Emilie Horken. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
